English woods

Given that imported woods are becoming more expensive and in some cases difficult to source, it behoves us to consider native species, which, although not as exciting in their grain patterns and colouring, are nevertheless perfectly serviceable. I suspect that these two woods will be asked for by players who want to consider the environmental impact of the wood they choose.

Beech, which is a very smooth wood, with very fine grain pattern. It needs a black sightline to show up.

Oak, with a more interesting grain pattern. This particular piece was low density and therefore had plenty of lead in the ends. Some oak can be very attractive, with its medullary ray patterns
